The Differences Between Being a Surgical Tech & Radiology Tech

Surgical technologists and radiologic technologists are members of a group called allied health professionals, which includes as many as 200 different careers, according to the Explore Health Careers website. In each case the technologist provides support services to physicians such as radiologists and surgeons or to nursing staff. There are many differences — and a few similarities — between the two occupations.

Radiologic Technologists

Radiologic technologists take the X-rays a radiologist reviews to diagnose illness and injury. They adjust and maintain imaging equipment, which may include MRI and CT scans as well as X-ray machines. They follow a physician’s orders when performing diagnostic studies and are not considered independent practitioners. An RT has contact with patients, either for a single examination or for repeated studies. RTs may obtain a medical history, explain the procedure to the patient, position the patient for the study and shield the patient from excess radiation.

Surgical Technologists

Surgical technologists, sometimes called operating room technicians, prepare operating rooms, arrange equipment, sterilize instruments and set up the table. A surgical technologist must be knowledgeable about sterile technique and the various kinds of instruments used in the operating room. They wash and disinfect incision sites, help the surgeons and nurses put on sterile gowns and gloves, hand instruments and supplies to the surgeon and help take patients to the recovery area after surgery. They may also restock operating rooms. Surgical technologists are not generally licensed but some states do regulate them.

Differences

RTs may be certified in different specialty areas. Some may perform specialized studies such as mammograms, MRIs or CT scans. They also develop the radiograph film or produce computer-generated images for physicians to study. Training programs vary from a certificate program that takes six to 12 months to a four-year bachelor’s degree. An associate’s degree is usually the minimum qualification for an entry level job as a surgical technologist, although some programs offer a certificate. RTs must be licensed or certified in all states, while licensing is not required for surgical technologists. Either may obtain certification, although through different certifying bodies.

Similarities

More than half of RTs work in hospitals, although they may also work in physicians’ offices, medical and diagnostic laboratories or outpatient care centers. Most surgical technologists work in hospitals, but they may also work in physicians’ offices, outpatient care centers and dentists’ offices. Either may work evening, night or weekend shifts, especially if they work in hospitals. RTs and surgical technologists spend most of the day on their feet. Both occupations require good manual dexterity and attention to detail.

Other Considerations

Neither RTs nor surgical technicians spend an extensive amount of time with individual patients, and may only see a patient once in a lifetime. Surgical technicians must work as part of team that includes physicians and nurses, while RTs often perform procedures alone. An RT career is more likely to offer future employment options. Job growth for surgical technicians is expected to be 19 percent between 2010 and 2020, while demand for RTs is expected to grow 28 percent, according to the BLS.
