Job Classification: Entry-Level Firefighter and Entry-Level Firefighter/Paramedic
The Salt Lake City Fire Department is currently testing for Firefighter and Firefighter/Paramedic. This process is for candidates who have already submitted an application with the department. All testing must be completed by April 16th, 2022.
Only those with current NREMT or Utah Paramedic certification will be eligible for the Firefighter/Paramedic list. A candidate may be eligible for placement on both lists. A combination of candidates from both lists will be selected for future recruit classes. The composition of the class will depend upon needs of the department.
Salary Information: $43,701.00/Yr. – $72,405.00/Yr.

When 911 is activated, it is normally due to circumstances that are beyond the normal scope of control. It is profoundly rewarding to have the opportunity to positively impact a frightening situation and help return to a chaotic event to some level of normalcy.
At the Salt Lake City Fire Department (SLC Fire), our firefighters take great pride in serving Utah’s capital city.
We strive to provide exceptional emergency services by focusing on progression, efficiency, and adaptability.
We are the first Class 1 ISO designated fire department in the state of Utah. Currently, only 270 departments, of roughly 44,000 nationwide, have such a rating.
SLC Fire has over 340 members serving 200,000 residents, with a business and tourism population that nearly doubles this number, within the city’s 110 square miles.
We are an all-hazards response department with over 80% of our annual 28,000 (2018) calls involving a medical situation.
We operate 14 fire stations which include: 12 engines, 3 trucks, 2 quints, and 5 aircraft rescue vehicles.
We operate on a three-platoon system with crews rotating every 48 hours at the fire stations.
Our crews provide structural protection to high-rise, industrial, commercial, and residential areas. Additionally, we service two major freeway intersections and wildland urban interface.
Our specialty certifications include Aircraft Rescue Firefighting (ARFF), Engineer, Hazardous Materials (HazMat) Technician, Heavy Rescue Technician, Fire Investigation, Paramedic, and Swift Water Rescue.
In addition to emergency response, our firefighters’ daily routine involves vehicle maintenance, equipment checks, job-related training, physical fitness, community outreach, and public education.
Area Information: Vibrant community with 100+ languages spoken, eclectic visual, musical, and performing arts scene, over 90 lush parks and miles of protected open space and trails.
Population: 200,000 residents with 1.1 million in greater Metro area
Job Requirements
Age: Applicants must be 18 years of age and eligible to work in the US on or before the written test
High School Grad/GED: Applicants must be a high school graduate or possess a GED or equivalent on/or before June 30th, 2022
Valid UTAH Driver’s License: Applicants must possess a valid Driver License from any state by the time of employment.
Ability to Read/Speak English: Required
Vision: Must satisfy the medical condition requirements of National Fire
Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 1582.
Prior Experience: No experience required.

TESTING PROCESS:
Written Exam – 40%
The written exam questions will be obtained from a test bank provided by Ergometrics. The exam is
scheduled to be administered April 14th-16th, 2022; location to be announced. Candidates may select their day of testing.
Oral Board Assessment – 60%
The oral board assessment will be conducted like an interview.
Method of Scoring and Ranking
An applicant’s final score will be obtained by adding the weighted numerically scored portions of the
written examination
and
oral board assessment
. The Candidates will be ranked according to their final score and placed on the list.
Preference points will then be added to that score as follows:
NREMT/Utah Paramedic: 1 point
Veteran: 5 points
Disabled Veteran: 10 points
Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) -Pass/Fail
CPAT is a standardized test adopted by the Salt Lake City Fire Department.
The CPAT is a sequence of eight events requiring you to progress along a predetermined path from event to event in a continuous manner. This test was developed to allow fire departments to obtain trainable candidates who are physically able to perform essential job tasks at fire scenes. This is a pass/fail test based on a validated maximum total time of 10 minutes and 20 seconds.
All finalist candidates will be given a CPAT orientation guide / preparation manual at least eight weeks in advance of their test.
REASONABLE ACCOMMODATIONS: Candidates may request a reasonable disability-based accommodation for any part of the examination process. Requests accompanied by medical documentation must be submitted to the Fire Department HR Representative at least ten (10) business days prior to the examination date.
